7 Principles of DevOps
Despite being a CMMI Level 5 certified Software Company, we took a step back a few years ago and decided to retool our factory for the new era of cloud startups and disruption. These 7 principles of DevOps are part of this change that we have embraced.
Principle #1
From WATERFALL to
AGILE
Agile breaks down development of features to smaller units, allowing for more rapid development and feedback from the customer and users. This minimises the risk of not correctly meeting expectations and requirements.
Principle #2
From MONOLITHIC to
MICROSERVICES
With Microservices, developers create, maintain and improve new services independently, linking them through shared data and API. We often tap into large specialised components and services, leveraging them for greater scale, performance or capabilities.
Principle #3
From TECH CENTRIC to
CUSTOMER CENTRIC
In the Agile methodology, empathising with the user, or understanding their story is a central part of gathering requirements. This is further enhanced by the sheer number of technology options on the cloud that change design from making do with components to using the best available tools to meet our users needs and UX goals.
Principle #4
From LOCKED-IN INFRA to
BUFFET ON THE CLOUD
The Cloud and particularly AWS offers a smorgasbord of components and services to developers to be able to build with the best of breed.
Principle #5
From DEVELOPERS VS INFRA to
DEVOPS
The Cloud removes the heavy lifting from service providers and allows us to focus on our applications and how they meet the customer’s needs and stories. The DevOps approach is also one of managing all infrastructure as code, allowing for more intelligent and robust designs with transformational automation capabilities.
Principle #6
From COORDINATED VERTICAL SILOS to
ORCHESTRATED HORIZONTAL SWARMS
We move from integrating silos of vertical power (such as mainframes) to assembling swarms of resources that scale horizontally when needed. The only limit to scale now is the size of our budgets and the preparation of our automation scripts.
Principle #7
From TECH IN BUSINESS to
TECH IS BUSINESS
Digital transformation is the new normal. These Apps we build for customers able to achieve giant enterprise-like results, help transform and reinvent our customers business.
